FIVE KILOMETERS SOUTHEAST OF DILLOWAY

It had taken twenty minutes for Firebaugh to arrive in a hovercar to pick him up. He said nothing until Okerlund lowered himself into the passenger seat. The chill of the night air clung to him as he adjusted the vent to warm up.

“Tell me something, Gaudette,” Firebaugh asked with the car still idling. “Are you still convinced this Hasara can be reasoned with?”

“We think the Clans know nothing about negotiating, but we’re wrong,” Okerlund replied. “Their batchalls and the mission bidding they do, it trains them in the arts of diplomacy and bartering. Yes, I think he can be dealt with. What we’ve learned tonight is he plays for keeps. He’s willing to take great risks, but he’s not reckless.”

“He has a death wish,” the kommandant replied as he started the long drive back to New Ustus.

Gaudette shook his head. “He told us he doesn’t fear death. There’s a huge difference between that and having a death wish. Hasara doesn’t want to die, but he’s willing to if he must. We learned a lot about him for such a short meeting.”

“You talk as if you admire him.”

Okerlund paused for a moment to consider that. Do I? “Not admire, Kommandant,” he eventually said. “I do respect him, though.”

“None of this will please the baroness, you know.”

“I suppose it won’t,” Okerlund said as he stared out the window into the dark Jangso night. “But I dread even more what actions he’ll take if she presses this issue and actually starts killing hostages.”
